My Favorite Way to Listen to Audiobooks

Photo features Peri McKinnis wearing her Apple Airpods and listening to an audiobook on Libby.

For a while I was one of those people that just couldn’t get into audiobooks. I wanted to hold the book, immerse myself in every word, and listen to my own narration. But the issue with books, especially popular or recently published ones, is that they are a little expensive. There’s nothing wrong with that I get that somebody has to make money but sometimes it’s either I get this book or I get some groceries. Tough choice. I noticed my friend was going through books like it was nobody’s business and I was wondering where she was reading them. She told me about this audiobook app and at first I was skeptical. But all it takes is one book and I’m hooked.

Libby is a more advanced library catalog with access to ebooks and audiobooks. All for free, no subscription required! The only thing you’ll need to provide is a library card from your local library which is also free. Once you gibe them that information you can check out any books that your library provides. Now here’s where Libby is different than something like Audible or your Apple Library. You can check out up to ten books at a time but depending on the book you might have to wait a little bit. It might be a week it might be ten weeks, your patience will be appreciated and whatever book you read is always worth the wait. The first book I listened through Libby was “The Song of Achilles” by Madeline Miller and let me tell you I was hung on every word.

My main concern when it came to listening to audiobooks was that I wasn’t going to pay attention to it. I’m able to control my brain whenever I’m read a book but listening to one? My mind may as well wander. Well I was pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed it! Maybe a little too much because now if I don’t have something to fill my time I pop my air pods in and I’m listening to a professional read me someone’s work. My best word of advice through all of this? Don’t knock something till you try it!

I’m a creative, I’m a dreamer, and I’m an Aries. I’ll read any book with enough convincing, I enjoy weird movies, and I’m a caffeine fiend. From the day that I brought my first book catalog home from school I knew that books were going to have a special place in my heart. Now I want to spread that love here, to talk about the books that made us cry, fall in love, and scorn because we couldn’t finish them.
