About Peri McKinnis

I’m a creative, dreamer, an Aries and I’ll read almost any book with enough convincing,

It’s so nice to meet you!

It’s so nice to meet you!

It’s so nice to meet you!

When I was a kid you had to pry me away from a book before getting me to do anything. It was my safe place. I think it got to a certain point where I would rather be immersed in a book, daydreaming of these far away lands, than deal with the real world around me. At first it was fun. I was rapidly going through books that even my teachers at school would commend me for my reading abilities. But when something makes you happy turns into being a coping mechanism rather than a cute hobby you start looking at it a different way.

So reading became overwhelming for me. Soon I wasn’t able to chug through books the way I used to anymore. It took too much work just to finish one that it became a chore rather than something I looked forward to. So I simply stopped. For a while the only books I ever read in my “spare time” were only books that I had to read for class. I only associated reading as homework. It seems like everyone goes through this phase with something they love. Especially when we have to deal with school and adult responsibilities, we don’t have time to enjoy doing these little things. There were days when all I wanted to do after a long day was lay down and forget about the world. So what made me change my mind?

It was all pretty sudden. I was required to take this particular English class “Women in Literature,” and in the class we were obviously given required readings. These stories that my professor had chosen just fit with all my favorite passed readings. And there was one book in particular called Educated by Tara Westover. A memoir about Westover’s childhood where her father taught her to never trust the government, homeschooled her, and thought Y2K was going to happen. Once she was able to escape that life she goes to school for the first time at Brigham Young University and, despite all odds, she graduates and even gets two more degrees. A great read for the class but soon it started a chain reaction.

Book of the Month. I swear this isn’t sponsored but if they see this post and want to sponsor me I will not stop them. Educated was a featured book on their website and soon I became a devoted member. Now I already saw the power that BOTM has on people thanks to my roommate at the time. She was already a member and let me borrow some of her books. It didn’t take much to convince me. I enjoyed Westover’s memoir and was excited for the new books that were at my disposal.

Then I redownloaded an app that I missed. GoodReads. I had it on my phone back in 2012 and all I read were YA’s and fan fiction I’d find on Tumblr. I obviously had to update my books to some that were more on the adult side but the rest was history. Looking at books, seeing other people’s reviews, and just enjoying books again. That same old love coming in even stronger. I guess if you really love something set it free. And if it’s meant to be it might come in the form of a cute subscription book deal and you’ll get books every month, which is something little me would love with all her heart.

So now I’m back on my reading grind. I’m back on loving something that I thought I’d never get back into. And I love it even more. I look forward to reading new books every day, my TBR grows larger and larger with each new release. I even started reading books that I’d never give the time of day years ago. Reading books will always be a source of comfort for me. No matter how long it takes me to get back into it, it will always make me happy.

I love gorgeous cover art. I’ve read several books because they had a pretty cover.

My favorite movies of all time is the Gremlins movie!

Some of my favorite colors are pink, orange, and any variation of blue.

I’m a big horror movie fan and the occasional horror book.

One of my favorite things to do is to curl up with lots of pillows and read a book in one sitting.

One of my big goals is to hike around national parks.
